It’s very much the same situation. Just like "American" is different from "Australian" and "British" (People will tell you "American" is not a language but it’s obvious when someone says this that they’re just shortening the term "American English"… same goes for "Mexican".)
Let’s hope though, that you’re talking about Portuguese Spanish and not the Portuguese language (Português) which is a completely different language altogether.
Excuse me, you wanted to say, "Brazil and Portugal", since in Mexico they speak Spanish, and not Portuguese.
Yes, Brazilian Portuguese is noticeably different from Lusitan Portuguese. The tempo of speech is mush slower, and the "sh" sound, like in "Gonçalves", is actually "s". And Portuguese find it much easier to understand someone from, say, Argentina, than a person from Portugal.

but, at any rate, I think that the differences between Brazilian Portuguese and Portuguese from Portugal are even greater than the differences between French and Quebécois.
French and Quebécois have same standard for the language, the difference is mainly accent and some ocasional regionalisms. Whereas Brazilian and Portuguese, have 2 different standards, there are many differences in grammar spelling and word usage. Moreover, a typical Brazilian can’t immediately understand Portuguese Portuguese, spoken at a normal pace, the first time he comes in contact with it — a period of adaptation for "ear training" is required.
I’m sure they can, once Mexicans speak Spanish and Portuguese speak – well, they speak Portuguese.
Brazilians speak portuguese as well – they are the only ones in Latin America that speak Portuguese. Portuguese from Portugal is indeed very different from the Brazilian Portuguese – just like Spanish from Mexico is very different from Spanish from Spain.
I’m Brazilian and I have a hard time understanding Portuguese people. The words are sometimes different and, above all, the culture is very different. In the end, however, we can communicate.
Well… If the person to know to differentiate the portuguese and the spanish, yes.
well, portuguese ppl "can hear" this difference as they speak portuguese and mexican ppl speak spanish!
p.s.: maybe it wasnt what u meant. maybe u want to know the difference between mexican and spanish – when they talk (cz the both speak spanish in "different ways"!) – or u wonder about the difference between brazilian and portuguese when they talk (as the both speak portuguese in "different way").

In Mexico the language is Spanish.Portugese is very close to Spanish but a Spanish speaking person will still have difficulty understanding it. French from France is easily understood in Quebec and vice versa.English can be understood worldwide by it’s speakers.The same is true for Spanish.The ocasional different words are easily explained.
Actually there is more diference between Portugal and Mexico. People in Portugal speak Portuguese. Most people in Mexico speak Spanish, which is similar to Portuguese, but spoken Spanish and Spoken Portuguese are not mutually intelligible any more than any of of the other romance languages. Also there are many people in Mexico who only speak Native American languages. They would not understand Portuguese either.
First of all. People in Mexico speak Spanish not Portugese. Although the two languages sound smiliar they are still very different. Yes, people will notice the difference b/c they can’t understand each other!
