Is it essential for Americans in the southwest to learn Spanish and understand Mexican culture?
Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Antonio are 3 of the most Spanish-speaking cities in America.(and there's more)
You can't survive without knowing ONE sentence in Espanol.
Therefore, is it important for them to know our language and culture?

I speak Spanish. I took 3 years of it in High school and 2 years in college. There is nothing wrong with learning another language and is required to graduate in NY. It’s ignorant and ethnocentric to not want to learn something new. Language, culture, math, science. yes, immigrants should learn English but there is no harm in learning other languages too. It exercises the brain.
I think it’s amusing to be around spanish speakers and they not realize I understand them. Some of the things they say are pretty funny.
To the woman who says it’s a filthy language. Estas PUTO!
Illegal Aliens come here and don’t assimilate to our culture. Why should we?
Last I checked, we kicked Mexico’s butt for the Southwest region. If anything they should be learning our culture!
My grandparents came here from Europe it took them 7 years to get citizenship , they had to learn english the constitution and take civics classes ! My grandfather said it was the only day he ever cried ! So hell NO we shouldnt have to learn Spanish !
Why should we ? This is OUR country. If someone comes here, they are supposed to assimilate to America culture, not be given to loyalty to thier own origins. I’ve done quite well not learning Spanish. I speak a few other languages brokenly, but the unofficial language of this country is ENGLISH, and if you don’t know it, its your loss.
Hell no this is the US not south America .Yes you can survive with out knowing any spanish .
No. I expect mexican immigration to already have reached its peak and slowly to wind down and for those in country to assimilate or go home. Then again I support anybody who wants to learn it. Spanish culture has plenty to offer.
Learning Spanish would be good but not essential. I am surrounded by spanish speakers and I don’t speak spanish. If someone comes to the US they should try to learn English. Most of the spanish speakers around here do know some English. If I don’t understand them they start telling me in English, it’s broken up English but I can still understand,
H.ll no !
I am a french citizen as well as a US citizen. and I will speak the languages that I want to speak !
You have to be kidding right ? I already speak 4 languages !
I worked for the US government, no need to speak spanish !
I came to the US and learned the US language out of respect.
I speak Spanish, and it was my decision to learn .Just as I am learning to try to speak Japanese. Both I do by choice not for any other reason.I do business in Japan so that is my interest in their language.Even tho when I am there I have no problem in communication as many have chosen to learn English and love to hear me try to speak Japanese. When my clients come to AZ from Japan they speak English and are very proud of their skill.
No one in the USA should be forced to speak another language to obtain a position of employment, unless you work as an interpreter. If you live in a border state as I do,most people know a great deal more than just one sentence in "Spanish".
If you took Castilian Spanish in school its pretty useless in AZ..Chicano,Tex-Mex and lots of slang make up the Hispanic language.in the border states..
If one wishes to learn another language that is simply their choice but in America our main language is English.
Only words needed are la migra and deportation. And no it is not essential, essential is rounding up the invaders and deporting them.
Por lo visto realmente eres un pendejo! Why would we even have to learn spanish? It’s those parasitic illegals who should be learning English. English is the lingua franca of the world, just in case you didn’t know.
"You can’t survive without it". Apparently tax payers and the educated class have done just fine.
Mexican culture sucks. They don’t treat their women like equals, the dead beat men are macho, they don’t value education, and basically they’re all still primitive.
While I am out and about, the vulgar mexican language is spoken and I am horrified that you would want my children to hear the common mix of talking about gay sex and underage sex that is very common among these savages.
It is important for everyone to understand each others cultures and language, however if you are in the US, English is therefore your language and no…you shouldn’t feel obliged to learn Spanish or any other language.
I am an Englishman living in Spain…I do not expect the locals to speak to me in English and nor should I…I would however, expect them to behave exactly the same, if they were visiting my country.
It is a sign of respect to at least attempt to communicate in the tongue of your host.
No. All you need to know is "mas cerveza" and "va limpio el tocador".
