Guess what, we are here for opportunity. My people will learn eventually. My parents learned in time when they came to the U.S and they are now succesfull.
There are other spanish speaking Latinos to worry about. Also, check out the Spaniards. They're white and they speak Spanish. In fact, because of their conquests years ago in Latin America, Mexicans speak spanish because their ancestors were forced to learn by the Spaniards. The Spaniards were the first Spanish speakers just like the British were the first English speakers.
By the way, I'm not racist. In fact, I hope to visit Spain someday as well as Japan.
Also, not all Mexicans are brown. I'm white skinned. A lot of people have thought that I'm not Mexican until I start talking like one.
By the way, I learned in James Clavell's Shogun that language is the key to survival in any country.
VIVA LA RAZA!
By the way, I was born an American citizen thus making me Mexican-American. I'm not an immigrant. My parents have been American citizens for 4 or 5 years now. I helped them study for their exams.

First off let me say that I am a proud support of immigration reform. My ancestors were welcomed into this country, endured hardship, and then prospered, and i feel that every person from every country on earth deserves the same treatment. I feel that the United States should have more liberal immigration laws with Mexico, and other countries around the world. So just to be clear I am not a bigot.
My question is this; When debating with conservatives about immigration, 9 times out of 10 they always bring up the fact that Mexican-Americans do not want to speak English as their primary language even though English is the unofficial majority spoken language. When my ancestors came to the United States from Eastern Europe in the early 20th century, they maintained the pride of their heritage, but learned the language of the country they moved to, to better integrate into society. So why do Spanish speakers seem to feel that keeping their pride about their heritage means not learning English, which seems to hamper their ability to move up in the work place.
So Mexican-Americans can you explain this to me a little bit, so that I can better support the cause of Immigration reform, against bigoted right wingers.
I personally believe English should be the Universal Language for the United States...however, there's alot of accomodating for spanish-speakers!!~! I can NOT go to Mexico and demand they speak English ---what's up with this???
A popular Mexican seafood chain restaurant is being sued by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, KPRC Local 2 reported Wednesday. The EEOC said two former Ostioneria Michoacán #8 employees were unlawfully fired shortly after being hired.
"During the orientation, they were told they were being fired because they could not speak Spanish and their servers were required to speak Spanish," said Kathy Boutchee with the EEOC. "You can't use Spanish speaking for a requirement as a job unless there is a business necessity. A business necessity is not for the convenience of the employer."
The EEOC said that even though its a Mexican restaurant, located in a largely Hispanic area, the agency's investigation shows the majority of the restaurant's customers are not made up of only Spanish speakers. It said, therefore, speaking Spanish should not be a requirement to work at the restaurant.
The Michoacán Seafood Group's attorney said, "Michoacán is an equal-opportunity employer. The company strongly denies that it engaged in any discrimination. The two former employees in question were terminated for legitimate, business-related reasons. Michoacán will aggressively defend itself and fully expects to prevail in a court of law."
The EEOC said the two former workers are seeking back wages, punitive damages and other relief from the restaurant. http://www.click2houston.com/news/21169062/detail.html

Okay, please do not be offended, (no racism intended) but I've noticed that Mexican Spanish speakers tend to talk really fast and I have a hard time understanding them, but I can understand other dialects just fine, (Cubans, Argentineans, Chileans, Spanish, etc.)
So my final two questions are why can't I understand Mexican Spanish as well as other dialects and are Spanish speakers from Mexico known to have the fastest Spanish speaking dialect?

My husband's work has made it their policy that no one can speak spanish at work. The manager was asking all of the english speakers if they were annoyed by the spanish speakers. Today they handed out a policy letter to all employees not to speak spanish.
Do they have a legal right to do that or is it going against freedom of speech and it is discrimination??
There were no customers around- they work in a warehouse.
