I grew up speaking mexican spanish in my home. Spanish was mandatory starting in middle school. I thought "oh this will be easy" but when I got to class I was really confused. Senora Anderson used words such as"vosotros, coche(and other vocab.) etc" that I've never heard of. When my papi corrected my homework I half of it wrong.

I understand that she uses some words from spain and others from latin America. She also tells me that I'm being rude and disrespectful because I'm not using formal spanish when talking to an adult. But this was my godparent and we are close thus not using formal language. I get confused especially when she randomly decides to use spanish over mexican vocabulary.

Do other Mexicans who take spanish have this issue or is it just me? I'm really upset with my grade and how the teacher is always telling me I'm wrong when I'm trying my best.
I found out before the first week ended it wouldn't be easy. I started trying as hard as I did in other classes. We don't just speak slang and use poor grammar at home. There is times where I need to speak proper spanish. That is a common misconception. Not all mexicans are lazy and in ELL.

I'm not trying to complain. I'm asking for advice at getting a better grade in this class. After one failed assignment I learned not to ask my dad for help.

I need help in my TX History homework..
My homework is based on TX History vocabulary..
& directions are like this..
*Read the 4 words and decide how the words are all connected; then write an explanation of the connection...

#1: the four words are: Rebel, Insurgent, Secede, & Civil war
#2: the four words are: Manifest destiny, Annex, Mexican Cession, & Frontier.
#3: the four words are: Envoy, Treaty, Provoke, & Strained.
#4: the four words are: Slaves, Plantation, Manufacture, & Cotton.

*THANKS! :D
You need to use the 4 words & see how they connect and write it in complete sentences(:

I don't want to come across rascist or mean, I am just really curious about this and can't ask the person directly because I don't want to offend her. I live in L.A. and work with with this 25 year old Mexican female who has lived in the U.S. since she was 2. Her vocabulary and English is very poor considering she lived here since the age most people start to speak. For instance, she may refer to fish (plural) as "fishes" - stuff like that. I realize that her parents must not have spoken English, which slowed the process, but she has lived here 23 out of the 25 years of her life. Any ideas?

Contributions Mexican Americans have made to the culture of the United States. Contributions to consider are political action, food, holiday traditions, vocabulary, and fashion. (Choose one of these categories as a focus.) and write a brief write up to explain the historical aspect

I already know the basics nd a lil more cuz I'm Hispanic nd un Spanish one in highschool but I just got a job al el rancho a Mexican supermarket and I need to be able to speak fluent. if I teach myself how do I do it? Luke start with vocabulary. but I just don't know hour put the sentences together and I need a lot of practice. help please!

Why is it that whenever someone talks about immigration, they go straight to the bias and say Mexicans. Last time I checked there are immigrants from asia, india, europe, colombia, guatemala, honduras, venezuela, argentina, peru, and so many other countries. Just because someone speaks a form of spanish because believe it or not every country speaks spanish differently with a whole different vocabulary, you all say Mexican. Mexicans don't call you British because you speak English so why call latinos Mexican becuase they speak Spanish?

Rude comments will be reported so answer respectfully and honestly.

Is it difficult? I like english language so much but I think it's a bit hard to speak. Even more when I try to speak fast, so them my tongue is a mess.

You guys, what can I do to make richer my vocabulary, and what about this question? Did I make a mistake while I was typing it? Be polite. Greetings. If you identify a mistake please tell me.

i am mexican and puerto rican mixed and i know and can understand quite a lot becuse of my family always speaking it. if i study a lot of vocabulary and forms every other night how fast can i become fluent?? where would i need to start in order to learn and be fluent?? please help!

Hello! I have to write a motivation statement to apply to a college in australia, I'm applying to study Restaurant Management and I have this following paragraph. The problem is that I'm mexican and my vocabulary in englsih is a bit short, so I need help with the spelling and and vocabulary. It would be great if I can have this idea but written awsomely.

Since I was little I used to love food, I used to love the field trips because my mom used to give me for lunch whatever I asked. When I learned to use the VHS, I was around 7 years old, I used to watch and record TV food recepies and I asked my mom to teach me how to cook it. Older, in secondary, I loved organizing school events that matter for my class and all the parties, organize the food, the music and money we needed. Make 40 people party at home a make them feel very comfortable and have the right music and the right food at the right time. My life has been full of all this kind of events, like the one when my middle sister got married last year; she hired five ladies to organized the whole wedding and the music was playing for half an hour and everyone were bored it was a disaster; so, I went to the ladies organized them to start give them the treats we have for the people in the dance floor, I went to a friend I knew she knows the right music and ask her for a list, give it to the DJ, change the music and stand by myself in the dance floor with a song I knew my family loved and start doing the song's popular step and suddenly after a minute 10 people were on the dance floor, after 5 minutes the dance floor were packed. After all that, I spend the night, with the ladies who were suppose to organize the party, organizing them, and I had the time of my life...

Uff thank u very much!!!! both are great and now I don't know which one to pick

in terms of vocabulary and the difference in accent

I've been wanting to learn Spanish (mexican or latin american) for a while... and can't decide what software I should use. I've heard that rosetta stone sucks, and that tell me more is pretty good. I want to be fluent in the language, and not just be able to memorize the vocabulary. I'd like one that has speech recognition... so, which ones are the best ones out there?

I am learning a Mexican version of Spanish, but I prefer to stay with Spain's vocabulary and slight pronunciations (a loyalist if you will). Is one of the two answers Spain's version of "car"?

I'm a mexican guy who is intending to improve his English.
Would you help me to bulid my vocabulary giving to me some slang phrases?

Farewell, pals.

No, I'm not one of those "ignorant Americans" who thinks that Spanish and Italian are the same language. In fact, I'm half-Swiss and German is my native language along with English. I learned Spanish for some time and then I took up Italian because I was inspired by a trip to Italy. I have noticed countless similarities between the two languages- similar vocabulary and similar grammar/structure. I like Italian better than Spanish but can't learn them both because I'll just confuse the two (which I've already done!). Besides, if I learn Spanish, that's an invitation that all those illegal Mexican immigrants in the US are better than me (analogy: if a guy kills himself over a girl, then that's an invitation that the girl is better than him). I'm actually hoping to move back to Switzerland, so Italian would be better. So, can the Hispanics/Spaniards understand at least the "gist" of an Italian conversation? I'd like input from native Spanish speakers, preferably.
OK, I'm sorry if I offended anyone with the comment about illegal Mexican immigrants. It's just that I feel the US is being invaded by them and we're learning Spanish to communicate with them since they don't know much English. So, if I learn Spanish, those illegal immigrants will be happy and I'll be forced into doing something I don't really want to do. However, I should consider the legal immigrants as well, and I have used a little Spanish with them. On a slightly different note, Italy is a country I'd want to visit over and over, but a vacation to Latin America or Spain is the last thing on my mind in terms of vacation ideas.

I read a lot of anti-immigrant chatter here, but I notice that more and more Americans are using the same tonal "sentence end rise" typical of Mexican street Spanish. Calling it "Valley-speak" may fool some people, but discerning polyglots can spot it immediately. It is particularly prevalent in young people and I've detected it on both coasts. The only other instance of this type of intonation occurs in certain Irish populations, but that variation is developed locally, without outside influence..

Is this one a precursor of things to come, ese?
Chukie411 & others:
I'm sure it is not intentional. In that sense language is organic and it evolves.
The intonation I refer to is when the end of a sentence is said in a higher tone than the beginning. It's one of the characteristis of California "Valley talk." You can also hear it in 90% of teen movies.
Be the way, Spanish & English are 2 of my favorite languages, so I'm OK regardless of the outcome.
Christopher: It can't make sense if you don't read it. I'm referring to intonation, not particular phrases of vocabulary.
And you're asking ME to use English?? Hee Hee.
Rosebuds & whatdoiknow:
I never said I disapprove of the change. I'm fine with it.

I'm a mexican dude who is attempting to build his vocabulary and learn more English.
Could you jot down all the synonyms you know of this word.

Im doing a book report packet and it ask for authors style or voice. could it be like the type of language he uses. like shakespearean flare or a mexican flare or does it have to be something about how he forms sentences. before i've put the use of imagery or specific vocabulary. could those also qualify as authors style or voice?

Beaners? yes beans have lots of proteins.

I'm a mexican boy who is intending to improve his English and to build his vocabulary. Would you jot down some swe@rwords in English.

OK, so i have never taken Spanish classes or learned from a book... i understand and speak about 80% from just going to church in Spanish and having Spanish speaking friends. I don't consider my self fluent, but i would say intermediate...
I have a lot of trouble with future and past tense.. Sometimes i get lost in conversation and would like to also extend my vocabulary.
What books do you recommend i use to learn? I want them to be MEXICAN SPANISH... Thanks
Alex- Thanks so much for answer, but i am looking for text books to help me learn more spanish... not books written in spanish.. Thou i will probably read some of those.. thanks for the suggestions.

I'm calling my best friend over the telephone tomorrow, and i don't want to sound stupid considering her whole family doesn't understand English. I can speak with a Mexican accent, infact they say i sound hispanic most of the time even thought i'm white and can only understand and barely speak spanish. I need to know the correct wording in Spanish for the phrase " Hello may i speak to..." I'm calling a girl, if that makes the difference in the vocabulary.

I would like to find teaching materials like vocabulary and verbs and and other areas to teach online that I can print out to use as handouts.....preferably in Spanish with English translation and pronounciation. I do speak Spanish myself, however, not perfectly, but, enough to be able to communicate with my students. My class will be in a home with only a chalkboard and whatever handouts I can provide. Therefore, I need to make copies of any written material I can find online.....common vocabulary, colors, days of the week, months, courtesies, etc. I have books that I used to teach myself Spanish and plan to utilize them, but, here in Mexico, it is hard to find anything for teaching English as everything is in Spanish. I do not have money to invest in materials or teaching books or programs. Does anyone know of a good website that I can find what I need to start? Thank you for your interest and response.

All the Mexicans who go to english classes can always have Foreign friends, but many americans can't even have one UNLESS they are loud and social kind of americans who push themselves onto these foreign students they see in buses or try to pick up forieng girls. I'm not that kind of person. But i want to meet some foreigners, and yet i don't see any avenues in which to meet them. Conversation partner programs fail for me cause i'm not a loud american with broad vocabulary. i'm just a quiet type of person. Finding foreigners in craigslists.com, sometimes work but the friendship never works cause they see i'm not a typical american and then they don't even want to be my friends.

So it seems only ESL Mexican students, or TYPICAL OUTGOING AMEricans( that sound and act kind of like people in american tv) are the only ones that can get foreign friends. If we are a different breed of american, then we have no chances.

i am wanting to learn spanish..I took it in high school and know vocabulary, phrases, slang, and some mexican-spanish words, but I would like to learn conversational spanish...what would be the best way to learn? im open to anything!
thanks in advance

For example: "Es que soy mexicano".
How could I say that in English?

I speak spanish, but i learnt in spain, so its castellano. I want to find out some pure mexican words to expand my vocabulary.

Saludos y besos para mis amigos mexicanos

My boyfriend is hispanic and I really want to learn spanish so that he and I can have indepth conversations. While he knows a lot of english sometimes it gets frustrating to try and figure out what he is trying to say. While I have a few books that have helped me with vocabulary I'm still really stumped and want to know if anyone has any suggestions. Maybe new books I could try or some other way I could learn the language quickly?

If they reside in the United States then they most likely speak three languages. English, Spanish and Nahuatl. Most Mexicans don't know that when they speak Spanish they are actually using a lot of vocabulary from the so called Aztec language. As many of you may know. Mexicans are basically a combination of the l Aztec Warrior and the Imperialist Spaniard from Europe. They use a lot of words from the Nahuatl language and dont even realize it. Mexicans speak a hybrid of the Nahuatl language and Spanish. Now three with English haha.

I want to learn the most common vocabulary (and expressions) of the El Paso/Juarez area. I'm 58 years old and STILL struggling to come up of the right words when I need them. Thanks for your help.

I am mexican and I have a serious problem when I speak english when I talk with someone I forget the vocabulary and the grammar, please tell me recommendation to speak more fluent and what kind of method you used for speak more fluent. Thank“s

I learned Spanish from my Mexican mother and from my high school. Now that I'm in college, I'm kind of embarrassed that people who aren't Hispanic have a greater mastery of the grammar, vocabulary and the subtle nuances of the language, and although they might not be able to carry on a conversation in Spanish as easily as I can, I often find myself being corrected. I was hoping if anyone new of a free and easy way that I could brush up on my skills. Thanks.

I am Mexican and english is my second language. So now that I am in college, I believe my writing skills is not at a college level nor my vocabulary. So I am asking for advice, what can you guy recomend me. Any suggestion would be very helpful. Thank You
