I agree with Uncle Tom. Not everyone who comes from a specific country looks the same. I'm Mexican-American as well, and have been confused for a lot of different nationalities. Peruvian, Colombian, Italian, Indian, etc. Women from Pakistan have even started talking to me in their language. I've also been asked if I was Filipina or part Filipina. This girl in high school even asked me if I was part Japanese. I have no idea where she got that from. Maybe because I have small eyes. I have no freaking clue. When my brother lived in the bay area (California) he used to go to this one electronics shop frequented by a lot of Filipinos. A lot of Filipino women would hit on him and speak in Tagalog. My brother would kindly tell them he wasn't Filipino and was married....he didn't make a big deal out of it. When people mistake me for another nationality, I don't get upset about it. I mean, it's not like I wear a "I'm Mexican" sticker on my forehead so how would they know??

Mostly the similarities between the people. Also that I believe spain controlled the Philippines for a long time so it could have something to do with that. Also, some people believe that some of the polynesians could have come from south america. I dont believe this to be true. Any how, I have never confused a filipino with a mexican, mexicans are proud people and you can usually tell where they come from without needing them to voice it

That's a interesting question, but most likely it's probably just based on their heritage. Also it's society who put those labels on others, how do Pacific Islanders and Filipinos look like exactly? Pacific Islanders actually have a mixture of different racial bloodlines which can be traced back to both Asia and Africa.

The Philippines also has different mixes which is why you might find these similarities. Mexicans also have the Mestizo mix: Spanish and Native American heritage. If you follow anthropology or history, it talks about how Native Americans traveled from Asia to get to America. If that is the case, it's only logical that there are traces of similarities of between groups.

I'd also like to share this video with you about SE ASIA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVgUP6ihgt0

We're all human too, a lot of people like to claim purity with their heritage but honestly everyone just generalizes. I've met plenty of Asians, not just Filipinos, where Hispanics will speak Spanish to them and mistaken them for someone from a Latin-American country and vice versa. If you believe that every race should only look one certain way than you're stereotyping.

I don't understand why people get so offended when they are mistaken for a different ethnicity. Russell Peters said he got mistaken for a Italian, no big deal. To me it's better to be mistaken for a ethnicity with others welcoming and acknowledging them as part of their group instead of people being hated for it.
